Magento :How to enable mod_rewrite

Log into the admin 
and navigate to system->cache management.  Click the “refresh” button next to “catalog rewrites”.

    Since I was working on a newly installed Ubuntu server I had to also issue this command:

    sudo a2enmod rewrite
